Prevent the risks of outdoor fires

Summer is upon us and the warm weather encourages us to spend more time outside. However, some of our activities may carry a risk of fire at home. Here are a few prevention tips so that you can enjoy the summer, safely!

Keep cigarette butts away from compost and mulch

Did you know that compost and mulch used for gardening is made up of flammable materials? As an insurer, we see just how many major fires are caused by cigarette butts that are put out in flowerpots, window boxes, flowerbeds, etc.

This type of fire is especially insidious, as it can take four to five hours for the fire to flare up in the mulch and reach your deck, balcony, or home. Here are a few tips for putting out cigarette butts safely:

• Always use an ashtray and place it on a stable surface away from anything flammable.
• Before emptying the ashtray, pour a little water on your cigarette butts to make sure they’re out, as they may smoulder for several hours.
• Never throw matches or cigarette butts directly in the trash.
• If you own an apartment building, provide your tenants with a secure container for putting out their cigarette butts outdoors.

Be vigilant when barbecuing

With the warm weather comes barbecue season. To use your barbecue safely, follow these safety precautions:

• Never barbecue indoors or in a small space.
• Always leave one metre (3 feet) between your barbecue and any combustible materials, such as siding, decking, fencing, plants, etc.
• Place your barbecue on a stable surface and avoid moving it when in use.
• Always open the lid when starting up your barbecue and stay close when in use.
• Clean the drip tray regularly to avoid grease fires.

Enjoy your campfire, safely

How much fun is it spending evenings by a campfire? To fully enjoy these relaxing moments, here are a few tips:

• Use a firepit or other secure installation to keep the fire from spreading.
• Make sure your firepit is at least three metres from your home or other combustible surfaces.
• Avoid using fuel to start your campfire.
