I still haven’t found a summer job. What do I do?

Review your CV and your expectations

Also, create a LinkedIn profile or improve your existing profile. You can then get into contact with different employers, recruiters and professionals in your field. You be informed of job opportunities and what’s new within these companies.

You may also have to review your criteria. Getting a job in your field of study is obviously ideal. However, it is important to stay open to other opportunities and have long-term vision. A job with a company that interests you but that is not directly related to your field of study may open doors for you in the future. By getting a foot in the door, you will be able to create contacts, improve your expertise and build your professional reputation. You could eventually get the job of your dreams.

Let your network work for you!

Speak to the people around you. Your family, your friends, your friends’ parents who work with companies that appeal to you could be excellent resources. Some companies have referral programs that will help your application stand out.

Contact your professors and discuss your job search with them. They are often in contact with professionals in their field. Sometimes, they even recommend students. It is also possible that they have positions they need filled to help them in their research or corrections during the summer.

Participate in networking activities for young professionals. Organizations like young chamber of commerce, young philanthropists, or professional orders will put you in contact with people in your field. Your network will grow and you will find out about future job offers from your peers.

Despite everything, what if I don’t find a job?

If your efforts don’t immediately pay off, don’t get discouraged! If you don’t find a summer job in your field, the important thing is to at least find a job. Keep your part-time job or find a new one. What you learn about teamwork, discipline and work organization will help you later. You will also avoid holes on your CV, which you would have to explain in a recruiting process. It is preferable to expand your experience on the job market, regardless of the field.

Also, take this time to volunteer for a cause that’s important to you. It will look good on your CV. It will also help you meet people and expand your professional network.

Finally, stay informed about job offers throughout the year. Companies not only hire students in the summer but also throughout the year. Subscribe for newsletters and regularly visit the career pages of companies for which you want to work.
